"The Extinct Burtle" - The last known burtle died on 20 January, 1905 in the Northeast Province of Brazil at the headwaters of the Amazon river.  Because of the burtle's excessive weight it was seldom seen airborne and probably got more use of its wings underwater.  Its diet consisted mainly of the cawcaw berry and small aquatic snails.  The local tribesmen considered the burtle a delicacy and it was the main course at the Friday night "wings and things" bash.

Claims of sightings in the Wambassi basin as recent as 1984 have prompted the Universitat de Brazille to assign a research team to investigate the claims.
